Smart in Tartan

This plaid dress is a star player in multiple ensembles

How did you acquire this outfit? In a secondhand store! I've had this dress for about three years. I remember buying it during my first summer in the city where I now live. I use it as a "home" dress a lot because it is so flowy and the fabric is natural and breathable.

Pictured: The writer wears the same green and white plaid dress featured in the first photo, with a collarless and puffed-sleeved green blouse and a wide brown belt with circular brass buckle.

Why is this your favorite go-to piece? It's extremely comfortable and easy to style. It is a bit big on me, but I really like how it fits (I don't like clothes that are very tight). However, because of that, when I wear it outside of the house I usually try to layer something else on top to keep it in place otherwise I feel like it is too revealing in the chest area for me. It is truly one of my favorite pieces of clothing. I like how universal this dress is. It can be quite fancy but also can be very low-key depending on the rest of the clothes.

Pictured: The writer’s “gothic casual” outfit includes the same plaid dress featured in the previous two photos, this time paired with a brown faux-leather cropped jacket and double buckled wide belt that perfectly matches the jacket (the belt and jacket look like one piece). She has added a grey tulle crinoline under the dress and holds a brown straw hat.

Any other comments?

I rarely take pictures of myself outside of my apartment because I feel really weird and self-conscious doing it in public. So specially for Clotheshorse, I decided to take photos of myself each time I wore this dress before I went out! That decision was made in the beginning of June. I've worn the dress five times since then, mostly with shirts on top, but once with a sweater on a colder day. Once I wore it to meet my very tattooed girlfriends. When we get together, I always want to dress witchy, or as I call it, "casual gothic" because I know they will appreciate it! That time I paired the dress with a fake leather cropped jacket and gothic-looking belt. One of my favorite combinations to date!

On the left, the writer wears a red and brown pleated midi-skirt, a brown-toned button down blouse, and a dark brown and cream plaid cape with a velvet collar. On the right, she wears the same plaid dress featured in all previous photos with a light window pane plaid button down shirt and a double-buckle belt around her waist. Both outfits are accessorized with hats and bags.

Gorgeous as always, dear Rabbit Person! We love the way this simple dress goes from informal to fabulous with just a little bit of layering and strategic accessorizing. Thank you for taking the time to document these outfits with your exceptional visual flair and share them with us here!
