The Dress is Even More Beautiful the Second Time Around

How did you acquire this outfit? This isn't necessarily a go-to piece, but rather a garment that I was happy and proud to wear again: my junior prom dress! I first wore this dress back in June 1993 and wore it again May 2017 to a Derby Day party.

I'm not sure of the original date of this dress; it has no tags in it and was obviously handmade. The fabric is an incredible organza crochet over tulle. I bought the slip at Victoria's Secret--it actually cost more than the dress--and my mom hemmed it to the correct length.

Why is this your favorite go-to outfit? Shopping for my high school formal dresses is a memory that my mom and I both cherish, even though I tortured her with my choosiness! I only wanted to wear vintage dresses and figured that she had nothing better to do with her time than hunt with me until my prom dress fantasies were fulfilled! We found this one (and the hat) while on vacation in New Orleans, at a vintage shop in the French Quarter called Paisley Babylon. I still remember how hot and exhausted we were from hours of shopping and the scent of the incense in the shop!

Any other comments? Back in high school, I accessorized this look with a choker from the mall (probably purchased at Claire's). As a grown-up, I paired it with jewelry and a beaded bag that belonged to my grandmother.

Thank you Karrie, for sharing this loveliness and for reminding of us how much fun we used to have accessorizing at Claires. This dress is stunning! It looked gorgeous on you at junior prom, and even more beautiful with your derby accessories. The hat and choker combo perfectly captured the 90’s. Love that beaded bag! Both are well executed looks.

I also enjoy how this story captures a happy memory of shopping with mom; often such trips can be special bonding experiences, and a way for our parents to teach us about self expression through clothing. Plus, thrifting is always an adventure and can be extra fun with the right partner. I imagine the dress has become more than just an outfit renting space in your closet, it embodies the memories of the wearer. This is what makes clothing magical. This is the reason to keep wearing storied garments.
